Mallorca is a beautiful island and has something to appeal to everyone. Stretching from the north east all the way to the south of the island are the dramatic Tramuntana Mountains. It's a great place for walking - if you go in the cooler months. There are many picturesque towns, mountain villages and more than enough beautiful beaches.
Palma is the capital of the island and well worth a visit. Don't miss the magnificent gothic Cathedral on the waterfront and the nearby Old Town with its narrow streets. There are many good shops in Palma, and you will also find the starting point for the Soller Train here.
A trip on the Soller Train is an unforgettable day out. The Train has linked the city of Palma to the town of Soller on the north west coast since 1912. There are spectacular views as the train winds its way through the Tramuntana Mountain Range. You will see (and smell) numerous citrus groves during the journey.
After travelling through magnificent scenery you reach Soller - a lovely small town - be sure to buy some freshly squeezed orange juice. From here you can take the Soller Tram (see photo on the right) down to the Port de Soller on the coast, which is particularly beautiful.
My favourite place in Mallorca is the resort of Puerto Pollensa, situated at the north-eastern end of the Island. Located a few miles from the Roman Town of Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa is one of the prettiest places on the island and has a magnificent backdrop of mountains surrounding and sheltering the town.
Puerto Pollensa was originally a fishing village, and there is a large marina where you can stroll and admire the many luxury yachts. Puerto Pollensa is a great place for a holiday - wonderful scenery, dramatic mountains, beautiful beaches, and plenty of restaurants to choose from.
A favourite place for evening walks is the Pine Walk which skirts the bay and offers beautiful views, you will see a variety of live singers, painters, or sand sculptors at work.
Other Places of Interest
Valdemossa is a beautiful village in the mountains. The musical composer Chopin and writer George Sands both lived here. The Costa Nord Cultural Centre in Valldemossa - opened by the actor Michael Douglas, is well worth a visit.
Another beautiful mountain village is DeiÓ, where Richard Branson's famous hotel 'La Residencia' can be found. DeiÓ is in a beautiful setting between the mountains and the sea. There are many honey-coloured stone houses clinging to the hillside looking as if they are almost built on top of one another.
The coastal route along the north western side of the island is absolutely beautiful, scattered with small villages and dramatic mountain scenery.
